Stacey Broughton’s head block basic tutorial is a classic pure technique combining one-length, graduation and over-direction. The sectioning begins with a triangle on the top, then a vertical section below the crown to the nape and a horizontal section on either side.

A curved line is then cut on both sides to establish the correct A-line shape, and parallel sections worked from the centre to the front hairline, establishing enough weight and density for a solid outline. Pivoted sections from the top, pulled to 45 degrees and fingers angled to mirror the head shape, are cut from long to short to establish the internal graduation. This is continued on both sides with slight over-direction to the previous section, then continued in the vertical section, pivoting out with slight over-direction to achieve a slightly curved internal shape. The same process is also used along the top section above the parietal ridge. The key factor is correct hand placement and accuracy in continuing the original graduated angle.

After placing a parting, the graduated line is continued on both sides, increasing over-direction to build graduation. This technique can be adapted to suit a variety of lengths, shapes and textures.

The result is a pure triangular shape on a one length bob line.
